TOP COP of the MONTH AWARDS



October 2008

The Top Cop of the Month award for October, 2008 will be shared by Officer Tanya Merten and On-Call Sergeant Sean Furlong.

Officer Tanya Merten, who is assigned to the day shift, has, on a daily basis, provided our organization with the utmost in community policing. During most shifts she can be seen touring the campus on her mountain bike. Officer Merten always conducts herself in a professional manner with our students and with everyone she encounters, but at the same time has a zero tolerance for flagrant parking violators, issuing the required citations to those who fail to comply with parking regulations. Officer Merten also continues to provide education in Rape Aggression Defense to female students on several occasions during the academic year.

On-call Sergeant Sean Furlong is the second officer recommended for the Top Cop Award for October, 2008. Since the beginning of the school year Officer Furlong has worked the highest amount of extra shifts for on call officers during the weekends, when most offenses occur and when we are in need of additional officers. Officer Furlong has a positive working relationship with his fellow officers and he accepts assignments from his supervisors and carries them out to his utmost capability. Officer Furlong, with his experience and knowledge of Merrimack College, has guided many of our younger students on the correct path.


September 2008

The recipient of the Top Cop Of the Month Award for September, 2008 is Officer Nathan Abdallah. Officer Abdallah has shown exceptional progress in the two years since he joined the department by embracing the concept of Community Policing, enthusiastically taking on projects, and performing as a team player. Nate is popular among his fellow officers and is always willing to step in and cover shifts when necessary. He is to be commended for his efforts.

May 2008

The recipient of the Top Cop of the Month Award for May, 2008 is Sgt Sean Peterson.
On the evening of April 29, 2008, Sgt Peterson was on routine assignment of securing the Mendel science building when he observed two male subjects he recognized as suspects in a recent theft of seven new laptops valued at over $12,000.
He notified Detective Sgt Dennis Peterson and together they identified, questioned and recieved a written confession from the perpetrators.

Also acknowledged are the collective efforts of all officers involved with this incident.

Sgt Jan Fuller took the initial report of the thefts and secured the video footage of the approximate days and times of the event. She then reviewed the footage and isolated a segment of tape which showed the suspects in possession of the stolen merchandise. Sgt Fuller then began showing various employees the segment in an attempt to identify the suspects.

Detective Sgt Dennis Peterson and Sgt Sean Peterson also continued with the investigation and viewed the tapes for several hours over a period of days in an attempt to identify clues in the video that would isolate and identify the suspects. This culminated in securing the safe return of all stolen items and the prosecution of all perpetrators involved.

March 2008

The recipient of the Top Cop of the Month Award for March, 2008 is Lt Thomas Murphy.
Lt Murphy has always made himself available to assist, counsel and reach out to those officers who are in need, either professionally or with personal concerns.
He has often come in on his own time and at various hours  of the day and night to help out without seeking any kind of compensation.
This department has benefitted from his 30+ years of police experience and he has imparted his experience to those younger officers who are breaking into law enforcement at the Department of Police Services of Merrimack College

February 2008
 
The recipient of the Top Cop of the Month Award for February, 2008 is Sgt Bob Cote. As a patrolman, now a Sergeant, Bob has proven himself with his knowledge of campus policing and with his unique style of community interaction.
He is well known and easily approachable by both his co-workers and the college community.
Sgt Cote has been a valuable asset to Sgt Dennis peterson in assisting him with the locating, investigating and interviewing of suspects and witnesses with several incidents on campus.
He maintains a professional demeanor, is genuinely helpful towards others and serves as a positive role model in the department,.

He has often come in on his own time and at various hours  of the day and night to help out without seeking any kind of compensation.This department has benefitted from his 30+ years of police experience and he has imparted his experience to those younger officers who are breaking into law enforcement at the Department of Police Services of Merrimack College February 2008 

January 2008

The recipient of the Top Cop of the Month Award for January, 2008 is Lieutenant Michael DelGreco who has been with Police Services for ten years and has provided the department with his utmost dedication.

In his current assignment, Mike is responsible for investigating all serious crimes that occur on campus. He is committed to respond at any time of the day or night to conduct investigations.

Lt. Delgreco has recently been appointed second in command of the department, taking charge in the Chief's absence, and has displayed outstanding knowledge and committment to the Merrimack College community.

Lt. DelGreco recently received a Special Recognition Award from the Massachusetts Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (MACLEA) for his quick action in recovering property stolen from two students. The stolen items were located in Lawrence, MA.

Mike is married with two daughters, one of whom is a freshman at Merrimack.

December 2007

Officer Tanya Merten is the recipient of the Top Cop of the Month Award for December, 2007. Tanya's responsibilities include traffic and parking enforcement, aminataining the department uniform and supply room as Quartermaster, and assisting in the training of newly hired officers and dispatchers. She performs her assignments professionally, is knowlegeable, and always does what is asked and expected of her as a police officer. She has held a black belt in Chung Moo Doe 8 Martial Arts since 2002.

November 2007

Officer Kelly Anderson is the Top Cop of the Month Award recipient for the month of November, 2007. Kelly is the senior officer at Merrimack Department of Police Services, having been here for 20 years. She is responsible for all parking issues and maintains records for parking violations at the college. She is also responsible for issuing parking decals for every Merrimack student and employee.

If you were to speak with any staff or students on campus who have been here for any length of time they would light up with a smile when Kelly's name is mentioned. She is extremely service oriented and is known for her willingness to go the extra mile to make fair and equitable decisions on parking issues.

Kelly loves animals, enjoys horror movies, is a social butterfly, and has a great sense of humor.

October 2007

Sergeant Janice Fuller is awarded the Top Cop of the Month Award for the month of October, 2007 for her efforts in Crime Prevention Programming to staff, faculty and students. Jan is also responsible for maintaining the Police Services webpage. Sergeant Fuller has been at Merrimack for two years and is the day shift supervisor.

September 2007

Officer Phil Karampatsos and Office Manager Kathy Deschene are awarded the Department's first ever Top Cop of the Month Award for their exemplary efforts in managing and upgrading the Department's report writing and log maintenance program, Informant 2000, that was recently upgraded.

Officer Karampatsos put in many hours of work, much of it in his own time, to provide a useful, in-depth manual for use by patrol officers to familiarize themselves with the recent upgrades. he has shown himself to be a dedicated and knowledgeable member of this department.

Phil has been at Merrimack for almost two years as a Patrol officer on the evening and midnight shifts. he attended the full-time Police Academy run by the Municipal Police Training Committee at Boylston, MA. Phil is married with two girls.

Kathy Deschene also spent untold hours in the office during the evening and weekends to ensure the program was ready for the start of the school year. Her dedication is much appreciated.

Kathy has been at Merrimack for about one and a half years and has been an enormous support system for the Department of Police Services. She has revamped many of the outdated systems. Kathleen is married with two children, one boy and a girl, who is now attending Merrimack as a student.

Phil and Kathy are to be congratulated for the work they have put in to adapt the program appropriately for our needs.
