Career Advisor, Girard School of Business

Position Overview:  The Career Advisor for the Girard School of Business is responsible for establishing and nurturing long-term relationships with the Girard School of Business undergraduate and graduate students beginning in their first semester on campus. The Advisor will support students’ career development through comprehensive career advising including assessment of unique skills, values, and interests; exploration of life choices and career paths; and guidance while navigating opportunities for networking, co-ops, internships, experiential education and the full-time job search. The Advisor will primarily work one-on-one with students through advising appointments, but may also spend time in the classroom and collaborating on team programs.  S/he will serve as a liaison to academic departments and a conduit for the flow of communication to identify student needs and communicate opportunities.

The Career Advisor for the Girard School of Business is a member of the O’Brien Center for Career Development’s professional staff, and reports directly to the Director of Career Advising.  S/he will operate with an indirect reporting to the Dean of the Girard School of Business (GSB).  This Advisor will also collaborate with the other Business Career Advisor as a team to serve the career needs of both the undergraduate and graduate students in the GSB.  The Business Career Advisors are physically located in the Comprehensive Business Advising Center in close proximity to the business faculty, staff, and students, while simultaneously functioning as an integral member of the central O’Brien Center team.

Advising & Assessments:

Using the best practices within career advising, serve undergraduate and graduate students by:

  • Advising students with self-exploration (administering assessments of values, interests, personality, skills, and strengths), career exploration and discernment, and guiding students through the results.
  • Advising students individually and in small groups on other career development topics such as selection of major, resume, cover letter development, internship/co-op/full-time job searches, networking, interviewing, job offers, salary negotiation, professionalism, and emotional intelligence. 
  • Helping students create their individualized Career Action Plan.
  • Advising and helping prepare students who are applying to graduate/professional schools and/or service opportunities.

Experiential Education:

  • Promote and advertise internships, co-ops and full-time employment opportunities to students.
  • Manage internship process for students including registrations, mid-point check-ins, student and employer evaluations/reflection, and corresponding with appropriate offices on campus.
  • Maintain a strong understanding of career development professional standards, competencies and outcomes; current workforce trends, and employer needs/professional development expectations.

Facilitate classroom presentations such as:

  • General announcements of upcoming events and career development services offered by The O’Brien Center and the GSB.
  • Workshops and classroom presentations on various career development topics.
  • First Year Experience program sessions and corresponding small group advising sessions.

Special Programs & Events:

  • Assist in planning, implementation, and evaluation of all departmental services and signature initiatives, including career fairs and employer/alumni events, walk-in advising hours, and off-site Professional Development Retreats.

Cross-Campus Collaboration:

  • Engage in regular meetings and initiate frequent communication with Academic Dean and other faculty and staff within the GSB. 
  • Assist other offices in their programming/signature events such as Incoming Student Orientation Sessions Admissions Events, Homecoming, Commencement, and Reunion.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree required.
  • 1-4 years of career development and/or counseling experience required, preferably in higher education.
  • Strategy development and team management experience preferred. 
  • Thrives in an entrepreneurial atmosphere, has a high degree of personal responsibility, is
  • committed to continuous improvement to ensure the best outcomes, and has unwavering focus on the students we serve. 
  • Ability to identify and use selected assessments to engage student self-awareness, and administer, score, interpret, report, and record findings from assessment instruments appropriately.
  • High level ability to collaborate with faculty, students, administrators, and departments campus-wide.
  • Collaborative and team-focused working style with the ability to multi-task and thrive in a changing, dynamic environment.
  • Knowledge of best practices in student career advising; ability to identify, select, and implement career advising/coaching/counseling interventions and techniques appropriate to student goals and needs.
  • Deep understanding of the ever-changing workforce and industry trends.
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong and visible leadership skills; successful cross-institutional
  • programming and initiatives; and creation of new programs.
  • Experience with Symplicity or other CRM system for student appointments, document reviews, experiential education, employer database, and email announcements.
