First Year Experience

Convocation

Every September, Merrimack College begins the academic year with the celebration of the Mass of the Holy Spirit and the Academic Convocation.

Convocation is a shared experience that allows us to explore an academic or intellectual issue more deeply together, as a community.

The 2017 keynote speaker was Reginald Dwayne Betts, a poet, memoirist, educator and author of three books: “Bastards of the Reagan Era,” the 2010 NAACP Image Award-winning memoir; “A Question of Freedom”; and the poetry collection ”Shahid Reads His Own Palm.”

Betts is a graduate of the University of Maryland, holds an M.F.A. from Warren Wilson College, a law degree from Yale Law School and is enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Yale.
