Catherine Rich-Duval

Cathie Rich-Duval is an Associate Professor of Marketing and Chairperson of Marketing at Merrimack College. The 2007-2008 academic year marks her twentieth year at Merrimack, with more than ten years as Chair of Marketing and the former Chair of International Business Programs. She has served as the faculty advisor to the American Marketing Association/Merrimack College Collegiate Chapter for over 19 years.

Prof. Rich-Duval came to Merrimack from industry with her expertise in global marketing. For over a decade, Prof. Rich-Duval developed and implemented a unique international marketing program at Merrimack where the experience takes the student beyond the classroom and into the corporation in a foreign environment. Students traveled to 13 western and eastern European countries and held meetings with large and small businesses, some of which are included below: Philips Electronics, Delftsepauw, Gassan Diamond Center, Porsche, Sabena Airlines, Orval Brewery, Metaxa, Kraft, Knorr-Bremmes, Siemens, etc. She hopes to continue this program in the near future.

Cathie is an author and frequent speaker/discussant on global trade issues and international business education at many global business and academic conferences. Her most recent published journal articles focus on global issues such as “Dollarization” and “Countertrade”. She co-authored a Case Study and Teaching Guide and presented it to the North American Case Research Association in October 2006. She continues her educational pursuits with frequent participation in the Center for International Business and Education Research weeklong workshops. In September 2005, she was featured as a panelist at the 2005 Mid Atlantic Marketing Conference, discussing “Creating a Memorable Encounter: Strategies for Turning Salem History into a Sustainable Booming and Tourism Market”.

Her practical business experience includes current real estate marketing and management consulting; and an appointment by the Mayor of Beverly to the Beverly Trash and Recycling Committee (conducting research and survey design for study, analysis and implementation). Previous work experience has included the founding and operation of Logan Trading Co., Inc., an international marketing consulting and import/export firm which was also certified by the State of Massachusetts as a WBE (Women Business Enterprise) and a SBE (Small Business Enterprise); a three year tenure at the Massachusetts Port Authority where she worked in Foreign Trade organizing and implementing trade missions for Small Business Enterprises; and Creative Department Manager at Kenyon & Eckhardt International Advertising Agency.

Prof. Rich-Duval has served on many committees and associations including the American Marketing Association (former national Board of Directors member and Vice-President of the Collegiate Chapters Council); Academy of International Business; World Case Association for Case Method Research and Application; Northeast Business and Economic Association, College Consortium of International Studies; Women in World Trade, American Collegiate Retail Association and the Academy of Business Education.

She earned a B.S. in business administration from Boston College with a concentration in marketing, an M.B.A. from Suffolk University with a concentration in nternational marketing and management, and a Certificate in Advanced Management Studies from Babson College focusing in Marketing and International Business. In her quest for continuous improvement and professional development, in April 2004 Professor Rich-Duval completed the American Marketing Association’s Professional Certified Marketer Program (PCM), a professional certification in marketing. She maintains this PCM certification by currency in her professional and academic pursuits.

Cathie’s family includes her husband John, an aviation management professional; three children and two grandchildren.
