Recent Research and Professional Experience           

Dennis O’Brien is the Principal of the O’Brien Media Group media-marketing consultancy. Dennis provides collaborative consultative services to print and online publishers in audience development, consumer marketing, e-commerce and social media. His experience includes both niche and general interest publishing with an expertise in niche vertical categories.

 

Before forming the O’Brien Media Group, Dennis led the e-commerce and consumer marketing departments of New Track Media LLC from 2008–2011. As VP Consumer Marketing and E-commerce, Dennis set the strategy for multiple print, digital, online and ancillary products in four unique vertical categories. Improvements in both revenue and profitability were made despite the economic climate of these years. Under his direction, new digital product lines were developed, the email file was doubled, online conversions improved by 30%, and e-commerce revenues grew by 40%. A balanced approach to customer acquisition investment and retention (CRM) resulted in improved customer value (LTV) for the company.

 

Dennis started his magazine marketing career at the Taunton Press in 1996.  Subsequently he held positions of increasing responsibility at Readers Digest, Primedia and Condé Nast. He was invited back by the Taunton Press to serve as VP Circulation in 2004.  He directed and profitably managed the subscriptions, single copy and products sales for five special-interest titles, an extensive SIP program, books, DVDs and assorted ancillary products. His work resulted in SIP and ancillary product sales growth of more than 300%, and an annual single copy sales growth rate of more than 22%.

 

Dennis’ professional achievements also include:

  • Speaking at the Folio Show in NYC in both 2006 and 2007
  • Judging the Annual Circulation Management Awards in 2006
  • Appearing in the May 2006 issue of Circulation Management magazine
  • Consulting for The Social Media Monthly, which was recognized as one of the ‘Hottest Launches of 2011’ by MIN
  • Teaching as an Adjunct Professor of Marketing at Merrimack College, The Girard School of Business
