Meet the Acting Dean

Julie Fitzmaurice, associate professor of marketing, was appointed acting dean of the Girard School of Business in July 2017, succeeding Mark Cordano, who stepped down as dean at the end of the 2016-17 academic year. She had been serving since 2011 as associate dean.

Fitzmaurice is a graduate of Brandeis University and holds a Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University, a Master of Arts in operations research/management science from Yale University and a Ph.D. in business, with a concentration in marketing, from the University of Connecticut. She worked as a research associate at Harvard Business School before joining Merrimack College in 2002.

Fitzmaurice has taught marketing strategy, consumer behavior and business statistics in the undergraduate program, and the graduate-level marketing class in the Master of Science in Management program.

Her research is in the area of consumer behavior and examines what motivates consumers to take action. She has investigated this in various contexts, e.g., beginning an exercise program, purchasing wine produced by vineyards adopting sustainable growing practices, and splurging on a purchase. Additionally, she has investigated how materialists are different from nonmaterialists, and is extending her research into the area of generosity.

Her research has been published in journals including the Journal of Marketing Theory and Practice, and Psychology & Marketing.
