Child, Family & Community Studies

CFC 2120 Family & Community Engagement  4 credits
This course provides an overview of techniques for fostering partnerships between families, schools, and community programs to promote healthy child development.  It emphasizes research, policy, and practice relevant to parent involvement in their children’s education.  

HD 2140 Lifespan Development  4 credits
This course focuses on the physical, cognitive and psychosocial changes that occur through the normal lifespan. An introduction to current research and theories used to explain human growth and change is included.                        

EDU 2130 Diversity & Social Justice   4 credits
This course uses a social justice framework to explore issues of power and privilege with respect to diverse populations.  Historical and contemporary oppression based on race, gender, ability, and other differences are explored.                           

EDU 2110 Foundations and Principles of Education   4 credits
An introduction to the social and philosophical principles which have shaped educational thought and practices viewed in historical perspective; the challenge of modern education in our urban, suburban, technological, and mobile culture; the professional, legal, and community responsibilities of the teacher; organization of the American school system; contemporary issues in education.   

EDU 2210 Child & Adolescent Development   4 credits
This course will introduce students to theories and principles of child and early adolescent development. The course will specifically address the application of such theories to educational practice, examining the biological, cognitive and social changes associated with development, birth through early adolescence. Students will engage in a service learning project to gain understanding of children in this age range.   

EDU 2310 Intro to Early Childhood Education    4 credits
This course will introduce students to biological, cognitive, and sociocultural theories early childhood development from the period of prenatal growth through age eight. This course will examine topics including prenatal growth, infant health, language development, child care and schooling, play, family life, learning assessment, differentiated instruction, and multicultural perspectives of early childhood development as relevant to educational practice. Students will engage in an observational assignment to gain insight into the specific development of young children.                         

EDU 4330 Teaching Social Studies & Children’s Literature  4 credits
This course covers the scope and sequence for teaching Social Studies in elementary classrooms. The use of children’s literature as a foundation for planning units and lessons is explored. 

WLC 1000 International Customs, Cultures and Languages    4 credits
This course explores the culture (or cultures) of a non-English-speaking country. The course aims to stimulate cultural curiosity and cross-cultural communication, along with providing practical knowledge of the customs and culture(s) of the specific country that will be covered each semester. The aspects of the country’s culture that will be covered include Culture and Arts, Social values, Food and other customs, Economics, Geography, History, Politics, Demographics and other social issues such as immigration/emigration, the environment, and mass media. There will also be a language component at the introductory level to provide students with the tools to navigate the target culture. This course is available exclusively for Degree Completion students who are taking courses through the Office of Graduate and Continuing Studies.

MTE 1410 Foundations of Math I        4 credits
This course is designed to help prospective teachers develop a deep understanding of the underlying structure of mathematics, including the value of place-value systems, development of standard arithmetic algorithms with analogies to algebra and geometry, divisibility and other aspects of elementary number theory, as well as fundamental algebraic concepts and terminology.          

MTE 1412 Foundations of Math II      4 credits
This course is the second in a two-part series designed to help prospective elementary school teachers develop a command over foundational concepts in algebra, geometry, probability and statistics.                           

CFC 2510 Dual Language Learning in Early Childhood    4 credits
In this course, students will learn about first and second language acquisition theories as they apply to early childhood, as well as research-based methods for promoting language development in linguistically diverse classrooms.                           

EDU 3410 Language Arts in Early Childhood   4 credits
Students will learn effective, research-based practices for providing children with a strong foundation in language and literacy using developmentally appropriate approaches.    

EDU 3360 Teaching Science, Health & Phys Ed.       4 credits
This inquiry-based course examines how children learn science and how teachers facilitate that learning. The course will be based on a framework where students use evidence to construct explanations and engage in argumentation. Health issues and physical education strategies related to elementary students will also be addressed.               

EDU 4300 Differentiated Instruction & Classroom Management  4 credits
An overview of instructional strategies to adapt curriculum content, processes, and products based on individual student needs will be provided as a way to ensure that all students can access the general curriculum. Techniques for effective classroom management are included. 

EDU 4500 Language and Literacy Development with Curriculum Design & Adaptation for Children with Special Needs    4 credits
Critical theories and principles of child development will be explored particularly as they relate to children’s literacy and language development. The development of language and the components of syntax, morphology, semantics, and pragmatics will be investigated through case studies of the phases of child development. Particular attention will be devoted to how children learn a first or second language and issues of the effects of disabilities on learning. This will include in-depth review of the design and/or modification of curriculum, instructional materials, and the general education classroom environment for students with special needs. Current trends in early intervention screening processes and instruments used to assess young children will be reviewed and discussed.

EDU 4600 Curriculum Design for Children w/Special Needs    4 credits
This course will focus on the design or modification of curriculum, instructional materials, and general education classroom environments for students with moderate disabilities. It will also address ways of preparing and maintaining students with disabilities in the regular education (inclusive) classroom.                           

SOC 3450 Sociology of the Family     4 credits
This course provides an overview of the family as a major institution of society using a sociological perspective. The family is studied from both the macro and micro levels with special attention devoted to the significant transformations and changes the family is undergoing in its form and functions. The changing nature of the family is discussed in terms of its effects on us individually as well as the impact the changes are making in society.

CFC 3510 Family and Social Services in the Community  4 credits
This course provides an overview of community resources available to support families in need. The impact of government policies on families and social services will be discussed, as well as the different roles that individuals can play in influencing policy development.                   

CFC 4510 Fiscal Management for Human Services      4 credits
Students will learn about the basic budgeting, accounting, fundraising, and grant writing practices that are involved in managing human services.
