Programs of Study

Merrimack College offers eight quality and innovative programs of study leading to a Master Degree in Early Childhood Education, PreK-2, Elementary Education, 1-6, a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities, PreK-8, and as a Teacher of English as a Second Language, PreK-6.

Merrimack College also offers Program A, B, and C for career changers.  These programs of study lead to an Initial Teaching License in Early Childhood, Elementary Education, or as a Teacher of English as a Second Language.

To accommodate the working student, courses are offered on campus late afternoon and early evenings. Some courses may be taken on weekends, or as hybrid online courses.

Master Degree in Elementary Education

  • Option I:   This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a Bachelor Degree, and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for the initial teaching license in Elementary Education (1-6).
  • Option II:  This M.Ed. program of study is for teachers who currently hold the initial teaching license in Elementary Education (1-6), and would like to undertake an advanced program of study. Upon completion of the program, a mentored experience in an employment setting will be required in order to secure the professional teaching license. This mentored experience will be supervised by the school district.

For Options I and II, students may take up to 6 credits before formally applying for acceptance into the program.

Master Degree as a Teacher of Students With Moderate Disabilities(PreK-8)

  • Option III: This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a Bachelor Degree, and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for the initial teaching license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8).
  • Option IV: This M.Ed. program of study is for teachers who currently hold the initial teaching license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8), and would like to undertake an advanced program of study. Upon completion of the program, a mentored experience in an employment setting will be required in order to secure the professional teaching license. This mentored experience will be supervised by the school district.
  • Option V: This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a Bachelor Degree and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for the initial teaching license in Elementary Education (1-6). With additional course work, candidates are eligible for the initial teaching license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-6).
  • Option VI:  This M.Ed. program of study is for teachers who currently hold the initial teaching license in Elementary Education and would like to pursue a second license as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8). The first part of the program will prepare the candidate for the initial teaching license, whereas the second part of this program will be an advanced program of study. Upon completion of the program, a mentored experience in an employment setting will be required in order to secure the professional teaching license. This mentored experience will be supervised by the school district.

Early Childhood Education (PreK-2)

  • Option VII:  This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a Bachelor Degree and interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for the initial teaching license in Early Childhood Education, PreK-2.

English as a Second Language Program (PreK-6)
Initial Licensure with M.Ed. Degree

  • Option VIII:  This M.Ed. program of study is for candidates who have a Bachelor Degree and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program are being prepared for licensure as a Teacher of English as a Second Language, PreK-6. 

  * Students may take up to 6 credits before formally applying to Options I - VIII.

Fifth-Year Program of Study

The Fifth-Year Program of Study leads to a Master Degree in Education. Students who have graduated from Merrimack College will be granted acceptance after meeting the appropriate requirements.

NON- DEGREE PROGRAMS OF STUDY

Program A:
Elementary Education Licensure Program (26 Credits)
 
This program of study is for candidates who have a Bachelor Degree and are interested in becoming a teacher. The candidates in this program will be eligible for the Initial Teaching License in Elementary Education (1-6) after completing the 26 required credits, but will not receive a Master Degree. This is an Initial Teaching Licensure Program only.

Program B: 
Early Childhood Education Licensure Program:


This non degree licensure program will focus upon preparing the candidate for working with children in Pre-K through Grade 2.  The courses in this program will address curriculum content, appropriate teaching strategies, and modifications for children with disabilities.  This is an Initial Teaching Licensure Program only.

Program C: 
English as a Second Language Licensure Program:

The English as a Second Language Program will focus upon preparing the candidate to teach English Language Learners in grades PreK through Grade 6.  The courses in this program will address first and second language acquisition, strategies for teaching reading, writing, and other academic areas, appropriate assessment, and cultural diversity.  This is an Initial Teaching Licensure Program only.

Program D:
Professional Program of Study in Elementary Education (12 Credits)

This program of study is for teachers who already hold a Master Degree and Initial Licensure. According to state regulations, only 12 additional graduate credits in Elementary Education content areas are needed for advancement to the Professional Educator License.

Program E:
Professional Program of Study as a Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities (PreK-8) (12 Credits)

This program of study is for teachers who already hold a Master Degree and Initial Licensure. According to state regulations, only 12 additional graduate credits in the Moderate Disabilities content areas are needed for advancement to the Professional Educator License.
