World Languages Program for Teachers

Known for its active learning pedagogy, Merrimack College provides the opportunity for teachers to engage in seminars and courses that range from practical application to powerful inquiry.

Merrimack offers a wide array of innovative, active and content-rich programs for teachers in public, private and religious schools, K-12. The College awards Massachusetts PDPs, New Hampshire CEUs, non-degree graduate credits.

Tuition and Registration

Language Courses earn (3) three non-degree Graduate credits from Merrimack College through affiliation with the Division of Graduate Education. Each graduate course also earns 67.5 PDPs. (Tuition $825)

Participants may opt to take a language course for 67.5 Professional Development Points only. (Tuition $490)

One-day Technology or Curriculum Workshops offer 10 PDPs. (Tuition $130)

Payment Information:  The Bursar’s Office is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Instructors are not able to accept payment from students the day of the course. The Bursar’s Office is not open on Saturdays.  Be sure to make alternate arrangements if you plan to pay in person.

GIE535C Borderlands: Telling Stories of “Us” and “Them”

According to Carlos Fuentes, “Cultures only flourish in contact with others; they perish in isolation.”  This course will explore the Hispanic culture, what it means to be a Latino/a in the United States, what these cultures bring to the U.S.A., and what differences persist between Anglo and Ibero-America, as they oppose, influence, and clash with each other?  This non-degree graduate level course is conducted predominantly in Spanish with guest speakers and visit to the Art of the Americas exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Limit 20 students.

GIE510C Using Technology in the Modern Language Classroom (Part I)

This one-day workshop helps participants learn to create and integrate media and technology into the foreign language classroom. Topics include interactive online language assessment tools using technology and Web 2.0 applications, and the use of video and audio media to enhance the learning experience. Course formats include demonstrations and hands-on sessions with a variety of media and technologies. Limit 15 students.

GIE514G French Culture

This French immersion seminar explores the culture of France and other French-speaking countries.  The aspects of the culture that will be covered will include Culture and Arts, Social Values, Food and other customs, Economics, Geography, History, Politics, Demographics and other social issues such as immigration and emigration.  Participants will sharpen their language skills and expand their vocabulary.  Activities and drills will allow participants to reinforce their grammar skills and oral communication.  Participants will also be proivded with Internet resources useful to the teaching of French.  Limit 15 students.

GIE610C Using Technology in the Modern Language Classroom (Part II)

In this one-day workshop, language teachers will collaborate in small groups or with colleagues to create engaging activities and lessons using Web 2.0 applications.  This workshop is held in a computer lab, however, participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops, textbooks, and other resources that they may want to use as they develop their course materials.  Participants must have completed the GIE510C workshop (see above) or have a working knowledge of a variety of Web 2.0 applications including Wikispaces, Voki and Glogster.  Limit 15 students.
