Community Engagement

The Master of Education in Community Engagement (M.Ed.) prepares students to be non-profit leaders, social change activists, and leaders in the national service learning movement.

Students in the program are passionate about addressing pressing social issues and needs through community organizing and community partnerships. Students gain a broad understanding of civic engagement, including trends, theoretical models and best practices. This versatile degree prepares students for outreach and partnership work in schools, colleges, and community organizations.

The Community Engagement program seeks to develop, engage, and support a diverse learning community. Toward that end, the program welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and experiences to engage in our program as students, faculty, supervisors, speakers and in other ways. We endeavor to create courageous spaces for dialogue about diversity. The Community Engagement program welcomes your perspectives and ideas regarding how we can continue to do this better.

Mission of the Community Engagement Program

The Community Engagement Program seeks to engage learners in critical thinking and reflective practice relevant to strengthening communities by building upon community assets and partnering with community members.

  • Assets-Based Perspective: Actively seeking the strengths in people and in communities and working to develop those strengths.

  • Social justice: Educating ourselves and our community in order to understand power, privilege, and oppression and to collectively envision and build a more equitable and just society.
  • Life-long learning: The Community Engagement Program is one step along the journey of lifelong learning.

 

Why Merrimack?

  • Two pathways to completion:
    • Full-time through the Community Engagement Fellowship Program, which offers a full-tuition fellowship.
    • Full-time or part-time as a traditional student, working closely with an academic advisor to plan your program of study and timeline to completion. Traditional students have the opportunity to participate in a field-expeirnce assistantship.
  • Connection to a broad network of current alumni who are leaders in their fields.
  • Social justice curriculum focus, including numerous opportunities for meaningful engagement with communities off-campus.
  • Self-designed capstone project allows each student to focus on their area of passion in community engagement.
  • Funding available to every student to attend conferences or workshops.
