International Assistant

The International Assistant Program is designed to facilitate the transition of new international students to life in the United States and at Merrimack College. International Assistants (IA’s) arrive prior to the start of the semester to assist with the international student orientation.  The purpose of the IA program is to cultivate mutually beneficial cross-cultural conversations, experiences, and friendships.

Students interested in serving as an IA must have been a Merrimack student for a least one semester; have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5; and be in good disciplinary standing.

Responsibilities include:
  • Attend mandatory IA training.
  • Participate in all aspects of the International Student Orientation as well as New Student Orientation.
  • Serve as a member of Orientation Team. (Job Description Below)
  • Connect with your international student(s) approximately once a month.
  • Participate in some social and cultural events organized by the Office of International Programs and encourage international students to attend.
Basic qualifications include:
  • Demonstrate a strong interest in connecting with people from other cultures.
  • Be reliable, on-time, and able to solve problems in real time.
  • Proven ability to work successfully with a team.

This is an unpaid voluntary leadership position that will provide you with professional, personal, and cultural development.

Orientation Team

The Orientation Team staff is responsible for the welcoming and introduction of accepted students into the Merrimack College Community. This position is designed to assist new students in their transition to college, illustrate the educational opportunities, integrate new students into college life and prepare them for their first year at Merrimack College.   

Responsibilities Include:
  • Attendance at listed Orientation 2015 programs and training sessions  
  • Serve as positive role models for the College
  • Act as a resource to new students during all portions of the    program, exhibiting appropriate leadership qualities
  • Assist in the preparation and facilitation of all Orientation programs
  • Manage the set-up and breakdown of Orientation sessions
  • Provide assistance to on and off-campus presenters and families
  • Be a reliable, responsible, and flexible member of the Orientation staff
  • Demonstrate good communication skills and a willingness to help
  • Be on time to all sessions and trainings
  • Participation in the assistance of moving in the new students
  • Represent Merrimack College in a positive and enthusiastic manner
  • Assist the Orientation Coordinators
  • Other duties as assigned
