Global Education

The Office of Global Education

Delicatus ille est adhuc cui patria dulcis est; fortis autem iam, cui omne solum patria est; perfectus vero, cui mundus totus exsilium est. ille mundo amorem fixit, iste sparsit, hic exstinxit.

“The man who finds his homeland sweet is still a tender beginner; he to whom every soil is as his native one is already strong; but he is perfect to whom the entire world is as a foreign land. The tender soul has fixed his love on one spot in the world; the strong man has extended his love to all places; the perfect man has extinguished his.”

Hugh of Saint Victor, from Didascalion III, c. IXX

At Merrimack, we believe that real understanding—real connectedness—is borne only of experience, examination and reflection. This is what global education means. It means connections across cultures (across the globe, on our own campus, or in a neighboring township) are rooted in relationships, shared experience, and “unfixing” our homeland to use the language of Hugh of St. Victor.

The Office of Global Education (GEO) is committed to connecting Merrimack students in all academic disciplines to educational opportunities that will deepen their academic studies and understanding of themselves as global citizens whether they study abroad for a semester or on Merrimack’s own short-term programs. Global Education is an investment in Merrimack because when our students return they come with a new understanding of critical global realities, new skills of cultural literacy, and an expanded understanding of themselves.

  • Enhances and enriches Merrimack students’ academic experience
  • Develops cross-cultural flexibility and empathy
  • Equips students to live and work as effective global citizens
  • Nurtures a campus that is cross-cultural
