Short Term Study Abroad Programs

 
If you are interested in studying abroad for a shorter duration; Merrimack offers programs lasting 10 days to 4 weeks. Short-term programs are a great alternative for students who can not study abroad for a semester or year program.
 

Summer Session in Wroxton, England

This summer spend four weeks in England, living on the beautiful grounds of Wroxton College.  At Wroxton you will encounter the quintessential English village scene. Set in the rural heart of England, Wroxton offers a peaceful environment for learning amid a beautiful countryside of lawns, lakes, gardens and woodland. The College itself is a small college that continues to meet its founding vision of an intellectual community, cloistered in an idyllic setting. 

Summer Session in San Gimignano, Italy

Spend three weeks in Italy, to take two courses taught by Merrimack faculty and earn eight Merrimack College credits.  San Gimignano is one of the most notable and charming locations in Tuscany. The famous towers have contributed to its nickname, “Medieval Manhattan:. While living in San Gimignano, students will appreciate Benozzo Gozzoli’s frescoes of Augustine and enjoy stargazing at night. Courses are instructed in English; no Italian language is required.

Dublin & Belfast, Ireland

Ten day trip to beautiful Dublin & Belfast in May 2013. Students on this trip will take Writing Through War to Peace and Narratives of the Troubles and Beyond in Northern Ireland (WRT3701) which is led by Merrimack Faculty.  See Ireland’s turbulent past first hand by going to the sites of Bloody Sunday or the Easter uprising to name a few. This 4 credit course satisfies a Humanities, Cultural Diversity, or Experiential Learning requirement. It is open to students of all majors.

Pellegrinaggio, Italy

Pellegrinaggio in Italia: in Search of Augustinian Community 4 cr.
This course is an in-depth study of St. Augustine of Hippo as well as an exploration of the origin of the Augustinians, the Religious order which bears his name. after seven monthly preparatory seminars, students journey to Augustinian Italy to examine, first hand, sites of importance in Augustine’s life and in the origin and early history of the Augustinian Friars.This experience provides active, engaged learning and dialogue among a community of friends, and offers a number of inter-disciplinary opportunities. The course will enhance the student’s search for the wisdom that can result from a deeper understanding of self, others and god, the search which captivated the life of Augustine. The monthly seminars are held from Sept. to March and the journey takes place during Spring Break. Satisfies the second institutional requirement in religious and theological studies. 

Crossing Borders, Spain & Morocco

Crossing Borders/Convivencia: Study-Travel course throughout Spain and Morocco to examine “la convivencia” (co-existence) of Jews, Christians, and Muslims in Medieval Spain (711-1492) 4 cr.
Course is offered in English–no Spanish is required. Students explore the sites, history, and art of these three religious groups, and learn how they understood one another and interacted. By visiting places such as the Jewish quarters and synagogues, the Muslim mosques and tea houses, and the walled Christian cities, we observe how these diverse flavors still intermingle in modern Spain and Morocco. Included are visits to the Alhambra, Mezquita, Giralda, and many cities in Morocco: Tangier, Rabat, Osilah, Fez, Casablanca, and Chefchouen.  Travel takes place after graduation. Open to all students, including business and science and engineering majors. Satisfies the humanities distribution requirement or students may receive Religious and Theological Studies credit with special permission also satisfies one of the electives for the Jewish, Christian, Muslim minor.

Belizean Landscapes

Global Field Studies Program courses 4 cr.
Each course offered in the Global Field Studies Program is an intensive experiential learning opportunity involving a lecture/classroom component and field work in various remote, pristine, environmentally significant locations around the world. Different ecosystems are studied and compared, and every course focuses on the natural history of the particular location both from an integrated biological perspective [zoology, botany, ecology, biogeography, microbiology and evolution], as well as consideration of the human and cultural aspects of the region. Students develop an awareness and appreciation for both biological and cultural diversity and complexity. There is an additional fee for travel. open to majors and non-majors. [Students may enroll in more than one field studies course, using a different course number for each.] Prerequisite: Permission of instructor. one Field Studies course is generally offered every other year and students can expect that the particular region selected for ecological study will vary. Satisfies the mathematics and science distribution requirement. Three hours and one laboratory period per week.
