Michael’s involvement on Merrimack’s Student Government Association has provided him with many opportunities, but one in particular could be labeled as once-in-a-lifetime. He helped Merrimack make a major college curriculum transition – from the traditional five courses for three credits, to a four course, four credit (4x4) model.

As the only student on Merrimack’s College Wide Transition Team, Michael was able to give his input from a student’s perspective while hearing the administration’s view first hand. “It gave me insight into how the administration works. I was able to hear faculty and staff discuss different aspects of the college that I hadn’t heard before, and I took a look at college beyond the scope of the student.”

Michael helped to evaluate every course to see if it met the new standards. He doesn’t believe he would’ve been part of such an important project anywhere else. “Merrimack provides so many opportunities for any student to make a difference on campus. You wouldn’t get that at larger school.”

Merrimack is still outside of what Michael is used to as a Maine native, but upon visiting the campus he knew it was the right decision. “I wanted to attend a smaller liberal arts-based school and my high school guidance counselor told me about Merrimack. After touring campus, and meeting and talking with students and faculty, I knew Merrimack would be a good fit.”

And he was right. Michael has grown through his participation on campus. In addition to serving as treasurer on student government, he partakes in community service opportunities, helped launch and helps maintain Merrimack’s Web site, and is even active in the student Poker Society.
