Teacher Preparation Programs

Merrimack College provides state approved programs leading to initial licensure in the fields of biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics, modern languages, physics, and political science/political philosophy for:

  • Elementary Teacher grades 1-6;
  • Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities PreK-8;
  • Middle School Teacher grades 5-8; and
  • Secondary Teacher grades 8-12

The curriculum for each teacher licensure program has been approved by the Massachusetts State Department of Education and the Interstate Certification Compact of the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education. Therefore, students will be able to receive reciprocal teaching licenses in 30 other states.

The Department of Education offers teacher preparation programs at the undergraduate level for those wishing to teach in elementary, middle, or secondary school and for those wishing to teach students with moderate disabilities.

The programs for Elementary School Teacher and Teacher of Students with Moderate Disabilities should be completed in conjunction with an English or Liberal Arts major of history/ political science or history/ economics. If a different major is chosen, the program may take more than four years to complete.

The programs for Middle School Teacher and Secondary School Teacher may be completed in conjunction with majors in biology, chemistry, English, history, mathematics, modern languages (French and Spanish), and political science.
