Pre-Law

Merrimack’s Pre-Law program is designed to support and encourage students interested in studying law, and to prepare students for success in pursuing careers in this field.  Consistent with the American Bar Association (ABA), Merrimack does not recommend that undergraduates major in a particular discipline or focus their undergraduate education on the study of law.   Instead students should use their undergraduate course of study to build the skills and core values needed to succeed in the legal field, as well as take advantage of programs offered by Merrimack’s Pre-Law Society.  According to the ABA, these include analytic/problem solving skills, critical reading, writing skills, oral communication/listening abilities, general research skills, task organization/management skills, public service, and promotion of justice.

Traditionally, majors in the liberal arts, such as political science, philosophy, history, English, and economics, have helped our students acquire these skills and abilities, but students majoring in math, business, engineering, the sciences, and fine arts have also gone on to pursue careers in law with great success.  In order to help students from a variety of backgrounds and with a range of interests investigate and pursue the study of the law, Merrimack’s Pre-Law program includes a variety of academic and co-curricular components.
