Among the many passions Michelle Athena Norton considered pursuing in her education after high school, reading and writing allowed her to connect with brilliant minds from the past, understand a variety of schools of thought, and be inspired by the creations of others.  But it wasn’t until her sophomore year at Merrimack College that she realized that writing was not only a hobby, but also a fantastic career path that sparks people’s interest in a number of different subjects and issues.  The abundance of academic tools this school has to offer English majors made it possible for her, and others, to excel in classes and in personal projects. “The availability and individuality of my professors makes my experience as an English major all the more exciting,” she says. “Each and every person on this campus has a desire to learn, student or not, making Merrimack not only a place for the growing young adult, but for people of all ages who want to add to their scope of understanding.”

Michelle has made Dean’s List almost every semester, an accomplishment that motivates her to excel in her academic and personal life. “I finally gathered the courage to begin my first novel. Had I not attended Merrimack, and met so many wonderful people and professors, I would not have had the guts to put myself out there. That is what this community aims to do, make students comfortable in their own skin and to exceed the expectations we had set for ourselves when we first stepped on campus.” In addition to working on her own personal writing, Michelle has become a part of an online literary magazine startup on campus as well as the Writers House, which she says is, “a beautiful addition to the sanctuaries that myself and others have utilized and enjoyed in our academic adventures.” Michelle hopes to remain a part of the Merrimack community long after her departure, pursuing an editing and fiction writing career upon her graduation in Spring 2015.
