Learning Beyond the Classroom
Through the Department of Political Science’s Public Service Internship Program at Merrimack, students have been placed in legal and law related internships in the Massachusetts State Legislature, the federal courts, state courts, local and state law enforcement agencies, and public interest groups, as well as in private practices.
Guest speakers, on-campus events, discussion groups, and debates are sponsored periodically by the Pre-Law Society. These events give students interested in law, the chance to engage in important current legal issues and thinking.
Alumni law school graduates return to campus annually to share their collective wisdom on the legal profession and career pathways in law with current students. These interactive evenings enhance the confidence and connection of our students planning on pursuing law as a career.
Alumni (both lawyers and current law students) offer the opportunity for current Merrimack students to learn more about what is ahead of them in law school and the legal profession. By serving as individual mentors and/or allowing current students the chance to “shadow” them for a day, our alumni provide valuable insight and encouragement for our pre-law students.
In addition to the advice and support provided by our Pre-Law Advisor, LSAT prep classes are available on campus and locally. Also, the Pre-Law Society sponsors a LSAT support/study group that meets regularly throughout the year.
Law School Recruiting Visits
The Pre-Law program sponsors on-campus recruiting visits by several New England law schools during the academic year. These visits not only give students the chance to learn more about particular schools they may be interested in, but it also provides them opportunities to learn more about the law school application process first hand.
