Andrea Faris
Class of 2009
Psychology Major, Criminology Minor
As former Student Government Association president, Andrea has developed an instinct for people's needs and wants. It also runs in the family – her mother was secretary of student government at Merrimack in 1974. Andrea’s father is a Merrimack grad as well.
Andrea worked hard to become a leader on campus, and the students who voted for Andrea don’t regret their decision. She has delivered on small requests like getting newspapers delivered to the townhouse front steps, extending fitness center hours, and getting vending machines in the library, to bigger projects like helping to make the campus greener and more sustainable.
With aspirations of becoming an attorney, Andrea has deep determination and had good practice representing others as president of SGA. “I did it for the students, for those too afraid or not involved enough to say something.”
Somehow Andrea found time to also serve on the pre-law executive board, as psychology honor society president, and as a Dean’s Delegate, where the Dean of students selects a group of students to attend events and represent students. She was also co-captain of Merrimack’s tennis team.
Andrea continues to be very busy, but she has learned important lessons in time management at Merrimack. “Students here have a good balance between their academics and social life. They are prepared and groomed to leave with a solid background.”
As a major player on campus, Andrea found out first-hand that “community” actually exists at Merrimack, it isn’t just talked about.“ People bond here and you don’t get that at other colleges. At other schools students just come and go to classes – here they want to make a difference, the students are motivated.”
