Sociology & Criminology

Public Health

An area that many sociologists study is public health and the medical sector. One of the possible career avenues for those interested in becoming a practitioner in public health is a Master’s degree in Public Health. Schools of Public Health offer a variety of programs such as Environmental Health, Health Law, Health Services, Epidemiology, Social and Behavior Sciences, to name just a few. A double major in Sociology and Biology or Allied Health makes sense if students are interested in enhancing their preparation and prospects of attending a graduate program in Public Health.

A major in sociology at Merrimack College can craft a course of study that will help prepare for applications to Schools of Public Health. The following is an example of one:

  • SO 1001 Principles of Sociology
  • SO 4300 Social Class in America
  • SO 4600 Research Methodology
  • SO 4910 Classical Social Theory
  • SO 4920 Contemporary Social Theory
  • SO 3400 Population Problems
  • SO 3600 Sociology of Health
  • SO 3850 Sociology of Aging
  • SO 3330 Race and Ethnic Minorities
  • SO 3450 Sociology of the Family or SO 3500 Domestic Violence
  • SO 3800 Sociology of Gender or SO 4250 Social Change
