The Merrimack College Summer Jazz Workshop

The Merrimack College Summer Jazz Workshop

July 26-29, 2016

Grades 7–10 (other grades accepted per discussion)

The Merrimack College Summer Jazz Workshop promises to deliver an exciting and affordable opportunity for young musicians within the greater Merrimack Valley community. The Summer Jazz Workshop provides a fun balance of educational and performance activities throughout an intensive 4 days of musical study.

The Summer Jazz Workshop is led by an accomplished faculty who will work with students in various settings—classroom, ensemble and lesson—throughout the week. Chris Gagne, Merrimack College Jazz Ensemble; Paul Geresy, Merrimack College Pep Band; and Tucker Antell comprise the lead faculty of the Summer Jazz Workshop and will direct all ensembles, as well as teach classes in topics such as improvisation and jazz history. Additionally, current Merrimack College music students will assist as mentors throughout the Workshop.

By the end of their experience at the Merrimack College Summer Jazz Workshop, each student will have studied and performed a range of musical styles, from swing to contemporary. The Summer Jazz Workshop aims to equip each student with the tools necessary to perform within a jazz setting, whether in their school big band or at an informal jam session. Additionally, the Workshop intends to impart effective practice strategies, so students can continue their education. No previous jazz experience is required; this program is designed for ALL band students with an interest in learning about playing jazz!
