World Languages Program for Teachers

Known for its active learning pedagogy, Merrimack College provides the opportunity for teachers to engage in seminars and courses that range from practical application to powerful inquiry.

Merrimack offers a wide array of innovative, active and content-rich programs for teachers in public, private and religious schools, K-12. The College awards Massachusetts PDPs and non-degree graduate credits.

GIE 540 Advanced Spanish Grammar for K-12 Educators
(Guided on-line Independent Study)

Course Dates: (choose one)

Session I: May 20- June 28, 2013 (Course Closed)
Session II: July 8- August 16, 2013 (Course Closed)

Using explanatory text and practical exercises, this independent study course provides a comprehensive review of Spanish grammar, targeting problem areas of grammar for many advanced learners. Designed for students preparing for licensure exams, teachers preparing to teach advanced levels, as well as native speakers of Spanish charged with teaching advanced grammar concepts.  The course offers a collaborative environment to share tips and best practices on how to teach these difficult concepts. It focuses on challenging grammar areas, such as:

  • pronouns and their uses
  • distinctions between ser/estar and preterite/imperfect
  • intricacies of relative clauses and relative pronouns
  • comparative constructions
  • adjective position and word order
  • reflexives and se constructions
  • imperative and subjunctive usage
  • neuter pronouns
  • gerunds and participles
  • impersonal constructions
  • prepositional usage

This online, guided independent study course is delivered in six assignment packages which must be turned in on a weekly basis. Each week, participants will study the text, complete the online grammar practice activities and share teaching strategies for teaching and integrating Spanish grammar into their own classes. This course requires Internet access and all materials must be posted on the Blackboard course management system (CMS). Limit 18 students per session. Conducted in Spanish.

GIE515C French Civilization 

Monday- Friday, July 8 - 12                                 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

This is a week-long seminar of total French Immersion.  Participants will be immersed in the storied and rich timeline of French history, geography, and culture.  The course will provide an overview of critical events, places, and people essential to an understanding of France, both of yesterday and today. Narrated slide presentations, documentaries or films will illustrate different important aspects of French culture.  Emphasis will be on vocabulary building, improving conversational and writing skills, reading comprehension, as well as face-to-face discussions of cultural and historical events.  Activities, drills, pedagogy methods, and Internet resources useful to the teaching of French will also be provided.

GIT570 The Evolution of Hispanics in the New World (hybrid)

Registration deadline June 10th

This course is designed for teachers who wish to continue to develop their Spanish language skills and study the evolution of the Spanish-speaking New World. Participants will view award-winning films and documentaries and engage in focused discussion and analysis conducted in Spanish. Emphasis will be on vocabulary building, improving conversational and writing skills, reading comprehension, literary analysis, as well as online and face to face discussions of cultural and historical events of the films’ contexts. In addition, participants will create lesson plans and explore how to use film excerpts in their own classrooms as a means to motivate students and provide cultural insights.

Coursework and film viewing is done online with three face to face meetings/ excursions throughout the summer.  Conducted in Spanish.

Meeting #2: Wednesday, July 10        9 am-2 pm (local excursion)
Meeting #3: Wednesday, July 31        9-12 pm

GIE510 Using Technology in the Modern Language Classroom (Part I)

Saturday, June 1, 2013                                 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

This one-day workshop helps participants learn to create and integrate media and technology into the foreign language classroom. Topics include interactive online language assessment tools using technology and Web 2.0 applications, and the use of video and audio media to enhance the learning experience. Course formats include demonstrations and hands-on sessions with a variety of media and technologies. Limit 15 students.

GIE610 Using Technology in the Modern Language Classroom
(Part II)

Tuesday, July 30, 2013                                8:30 am to 4:30 pm

 In this one-day workshop, language teachers will collaborate in small groups or with colleagues to create engaging activities and lessons using Web 2.0 applications. This workshop is held in a computer lab, however, participants are encouraged to bring their own laptops, textbooks, and other resources that they may want to use as they develop their course materials. Limit 15 students.

Payment Information:  The Bursar’s Office is open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Instructors are not able to accept payment from students the day of the course. The Bursar’s Office is not open on Saturdays.  Be sure to make alternate arrangements if you plan to pay in person.
