Civil Engineering

Meet Your Major

In the civil engineering program, you will study:

  • Environmental engineering — Solving hazardous waste and pollution problems, providing potable and economical water supply systems, and maintaining a safe environment.
  • Geotechnical engineering — Examining the bearing capacities of soils, settlement of foundations and the design of both deep and shallow foundations.
  • Structural analysis and design — Providing reliable and economical structures such as bridges, buildings, port facilities and intricate lock-and-dam facilities.
  • Transportation engineering — Orchestrating the movement of people and cargo, designing airports and highways, and completing traffic studies to maintain efficient flows.

Hands-on Learning

Gain real-world experience — and earn money — through our intensive four- or five-year co-op program, where you’re employed in a professional setting. You can also participate in many experiential-education opportunities, such as our senior-design project, community-redesign initiatives and annual steel bridge competition.

Career Options

Upon successful completion of the civil engineering program, you’ll be well-equipped to pursue a career in civil engineering or a related professional field. Positions may include:

Limited course substitutions are permitted students having sound educational plans which, in the judgment of the department, justify the substitutions.
