Sustainable Infrastructure

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In ecology the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions. 

Why Study?

Both developed and developing nations face ever-growing challenges to meet basic human needs in a sustainable manner. Key issues include depletion of fossil fuels, global warming, water scarcity, loss of biodiversity and the human health impact, all of which are compounded by an expanding global population. 

Where would I work after graduation?

Students develop the skills necessary for effective and innovative leadership in the public and private sectors. Graduates pursue careers in the private sector, often involving engineering and product development, design, management consulting, and strategic and sustainability planning.  

In the public sector you may work with federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency or the National Renewable Energy Lab, with a state or municipal governmental unit, or with nonprofit groups, such as Environmental Defense or the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Degree Requirements

Minimum 30 graduate credits of which:
8 CH of Core Courses and 24 CH of electives (a minimum of 12 credits must be at the 6000 level) 

Core Courses
GEN 5001 Systems Engineering
GEN 6001 Finite Element Analysis or GEN 6002 Numerical Methods

To obtain an area of specialization, students must take one additional core course relevant to the chosen area and at least eight credits within its list of electives. Remaining credits may be chosen from any of the courses listed.

Sustainable Infrastructure Specialization

GEN 6032 Sustainable Infrastructure Systems and at least eight credits from the following:

CHM 5100 Sustainable Energy: the engine of sustainable development
CEN 5030 Environmental Design
CEN 5032 Applied Hydrology
EEN 5270 Energy, Generation, Conservation and Technology
GEN 5036 Sustainable Energy: the Engine of Sustainable Development
GEN 6020 Principles & Applications of Geographic Information Systems
GEN 6022 Pavement Management Systems
GEN 6030 Urban Hydrology & Storm Water Management
GEN 6034 Engineering Products using Recycled Materials
GEN 6130 Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Management Systems
GEN 6132 Leadership in Energy and Environmental (LEED)
MEN 5030 Energy Systems
MEN 5032 Solar and Direct Energy Conservation
MEN 5034 Windpower Systems
MEN 5040 Advanced Fluid Mechanics
