Student Employment Programs

Merrimack College offers a wide variety of employment opportunities on and off campus through federal work-study and college employment programs.

Federal Work-Study

More commonly known as “work-study”, many people use this term to identify all student employment programs. Some also believe that they can “study” while they “work” but that is not the case. The Federal Work-Study Program is a government funded program available to students who have completed the FAFSA application and have a financial need.  Many departments on campus and some off-campus non-profit organizations have access to these funds. The Office of Financial Aid will ensure a student’s eligibility for this program.

College Employment

This program is for students who did not file the FAFSA or are not eligible for the Federal Work Study Program. Students are paid through college funds.  In general, most students work six to ten hours per week depending on their class schedule at a minimum rate of $8.00 per hour.

Paid Community Service

Students who are eligible for the Federal Work Study Program and who have an interest in working through a non-profit agency should contact the Student Employment Office of Financial Aid. Job opportunities are more readily available and rates are somewhat higher. Transportation may be required.

Students are paid every two weeks through the Merrimack College Payroll Office (Austin Hall).  Direct deposit of student employment earnings provide fast and secure payment to students.

How to begin your on-campus job search

  1. Be advised that we are in the process of updating the way students search for on-campus empolyment opportunities.  Beginning this fall, students will search for on-campus jobs via the Advantage website.  Presently local, off-campus job opportunities are already being listed on the Advantage system.  Future notification of this new job search process will come from Career Services through the weekly public relations “What’s Up” student emails.
  2. Once hired, a student will go to the Financial Aid MyMack page under the Student Info tab to download the necessary employment forms.  Students must complete the I-9, W-4 and Direct Deposit forms.  The hiring supervisor will fill out a Student Employment Authorization Request and provide it to the Student Employment Office.
  3. The student will take all forms (I-9, W-4 and Direct Deposit forms) to the Payroll Office (Austin Hall) along with an approved list of identification documents (i.e. photo ID, social security card, etc.). Refer to the back of the I-9 form for a complete list of proper identification verification documents.  Your information will be entered into the payroll system and once you begin working, you will be paid every two weeks through direct deposit.
