Destination Florida 2014
March 9 – 15, 2014
Destination: Florida, one of Merrimack College’s favorite traditions, gathered alumni to enjoy coast-to-coast events in Florida to re-capture timeless Merrimack memories and celebrate recent campus additions and remarkable achievements.
The week kicked off on Florida’s legendary gold coast with an elegant champagne brunch at the Fort Lauderdale Ritz-Carlton. The festivities then travelled westward to Fort Myers, as the Warriors invaded JetBlue Park for a Boston Red Sox pre-game picnic and ballgame. Wally the Green Monster himself even made a surprise visit to pose for photos with his loyal Merrimack fans.
Alumni and members of the Board of Trustees teed off on the Greg Norman designed Tiburón golf course, one of North America’s premier golf destinations on Wednesday afternoon before reconvening at the Presidential Reception at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort later that evening. More than 75 guests joined President Christopher E. Hopey, Ph.D. for the al fresco style sunset reception, enjoying light fare while listening intently to remarks on Merrimack’s continued momentum and trajectory for ongoing distinction.
The Destination: Florida itinerary concluded with the highly-anticipated Naples St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, a beloved event which draws over 40,000 spectators to downtown Naples each year. The Merrimack College alumni trolley, adorned in navy and gold, (and a bit of green, too!) wove its way through historic Naples, preceded by the impressive beats of the Lely High School marching band. Over 50 alumni parade participants recounted the day’s events over a traditional Irish lunch at the ocean-side Boathouse Restaurant.
Although far from campus, Merrimack’s alumni in Florida continue to undoubtedly demonstrate their tremendous MC pride. We thank all of those who joined us for Destination: Florida 2014 and look forward to meeting you again in the sunshine state next year.
