Exhibit Darfur is a powerful photographic journey of the crisis in Darfur through the lenses of six notable artists: Mia Farrow, Aaron Cohen, Brian Steidle, Isabela Lundberg, Heidi McGiness and Carol Rinehart. The exhibit started in Denver, CO and is travelling the U.S. to raise awareness through the arts. Exhibit Darfur was brought to the greater Boston area through a partnership between Harvard Defense Against Genocide; Massachusetts Coalition to Save Darfur; The Sudanese Education Fund and Merrimack College’s Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations. The Merrimack College display is made possible in part by a generous contribution from the Catherine McCarthy Memorial Trust Fund.
9/29, 7-9 p.m. – “The Devil Came on Horseback” (Alumni Hall, McQuade Library)
The Devil Came on Horseback (a film by Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern) exposes the tragedy taking place in Darfur as seen through the eyes of an American witness who has returned to the U.S. to take action to stop it. Using the exclusive photographs and first-hand testimony of former U.S. Marine Captain Brian Steidle, the film takes viewers on an emotionally charged journey into the heart of Darfur, where an Arab run government is systematically executing a plan to rid the province of its black African citizens. Winner of multiple awards including recognition at the Tribeca Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival. An International Film Circuit release of Break Thru Films Production (2007) in association with Global Grassroots and Three Generations.
The film will be introduced by Irit Tamir, who works pro bono as the director of government relations and outreach for Investors Against Genocide and sits on the Steering Committee for the MA Coalition to Save Darfur. She has been a strong advocate on Darfur since 2005 and co-led the effort to pass the Sudan Divestment bill in Massachusetts. Hosted by Campus Ministry and the Justice and Peace Coalition
9/30 7-9 p.m. “Investing in Genocide: What You Can Do To Stop It” (Cascia Hall)
Years after the genocide in Darfur was publicly acknowledged, millions of Americans are unknowingly investing in companies that are funding this genocide. The workshop will explain how Investors Against Genocide has been campaigning to end this practice, the results achieved, and the simple, no-cost, actions individuals can take to force companies to change their investments. Presented by Eric Cohen, a co-founder and the Chairperson of Investors Against Genocide, a non-profit organization dedicated to convincing mutual fund and other investment firms to change their investing strategy to avoid complicity in genocide. He also is a director of the Massachusetts Coalition to Save Darfur and serves as its President. Hosted by the Girard School of Business & International Commerce.
These events are made possible by the cooperative efforts of the Center for the Study of Jewish-Christian-Muslim Relations, the Girard School of Business & International Commerce, and Campus Ministry.
