Student Employment

Merrimack College offers a wide variety of employment opportunities on campus or off through the federal work-study and college employment programs.

The Student Employment Office (within the Office of Financial Aid) will help determine and monitor your eligibility for employment. The Career Services and Cooperative Education Office (Sakowich Campus Center) will help define your strengths, prepare you for employment while at Merrimack and work with you to develop co-op or career opportunities.

Federal Work-Study:

More commonly known as “work-study,” many people use this term to identify all student employment programs. . Some also believe that they can “study” while they “work,” but that is not the case. The Federal Work-Study Program is a government funded program available to students who have completed the FAFSA application and have a financial need. Most departments on campus and non-profit organizations off campus, only have access to these funds. To ensure eligibility for this program, students should contact the Office of Financial Aid who will determine student eligibility.

College Employment:

This program is for students who did not file the FAFSA or are not eligible for the Federal Work Study Program. Students are paid through college funds. In general, most students work 6-10 hours per week depending on their class schedule at a minimum rate of $8.00 per hour.

Paid Community Service:

Students who are eligible for the Federal Work Study Program and who have an interest in working through a non-profit agency should contact the Student Employment Office of Financial Aid. Job opportunities are more readily available and rates are somewhat higher. Transportation may be required.

Students are paid bi-weekly through the Merrimack College Payroll Office (located on the 2nd floor in Austin Hall). Direct deposit is recommended for fast and secure payment.

Here is how you begin:

  1. Log in to myMack to start your job search.  From the Student Info tab, go to the Financial Aid portlet and scroll down to Student Employment Programs.
  2. Click on the jobs that have openings to review the postings for any department which you may be interested. Hiring will begin as soon as school begins. Each department will indicate how you may contact them, i.e. by telephone, by e-mail or drop in to their office.
  3. Once hired, go to myMack to download the necessary employment forms. Complete the I-9 and W-4. Go to the Office of Financial Aid (1st floor Austin Hall, Room 15b, next to the Registrar) where you will be given a Payroll Authorization form. This form will determine your eligibility to work and must be signed by Penny King, Director of Student Employment.
  4. Take the Payroll Authorization form to the department that is hiring you for their signature. Then take all 3 forms (Payroll Authorization, I-9 and W-4) to the Payroll Office (2nd floor of Austin Hall) along with a copy of your social security card and Merrimack College ID. Your information will be entered into the payroll system and once you begin working, you'll pick up your paycheck in the Payroll Office every two weeks.
