Dr. Christopher E. Hopey was named the eighth president of Merrimack College on July 1, 2010. In his first year as president, Dr. Hopey directed a range of investments and initiatives intended to advance Merrimack’s position as a highly ranked, internationally respected, selective comprehensive Catholic college.

Dr. Hopey engaged the College community in a collaborative strategic planning process to help Merrimack develop a clear vision for the future. The outcome has been Merrimack’s new strategic plan called, “The Agenda for Distinction,” which focuses on five strategic goals for advancing Merrimack to a national and international position of prominence.

Reflective of that vision is a renewed focus on faculty, students and enrollment. As a result, this fall, the college will enroll the largest freshmen class in recent history. The College has made investments in faculty to continue academic innovation and maintain a distinctive educational experience for students. For the first time, the College was named to The Chronicle of Higher Education’s prestigious list of “Great Colleges to Work For” for Teaching Environment and Tenure Clarity and Process.

Also reflective of the transformative spirit Dr. Hopey has brought to Merrimack is his unwavering commitment to providing the best academic and residential experience for Merrimack students. There have been numerous enhancements to student services including greater access to on-campus resources, more opportunities to study abroad, innovative new degree programs and campus improvements to residence halls and renovations to the Welcome Center, the Library and the Volpe Athletic Center.

Dr. Hopey’s vision has engaged the campus community and provided students, faculty and alumni with an ever-expanding collection of resources and opportunities, while raising the profile of Merrimack.
