Diversity Education Center

Part of Merrimack’s philosophy is that we prepare our students for life.  It is critical that our students live and learn in an environment which fosters an understanding and appreciation of peoples of different cultures.  By doing so, we can learn from each other’s perspectives, help decrease racial stereotyping, and increase student commitment to community service.  It is imperative that in this era of globalization, our community explores and experiences the richness of diverse cultures, traditions, languages, opinions and perspectives.

We strive for increased diversity among Merrimack’s student body as well as the faculty, administration and staff, and to promote understanding and acceptance of different backgrounds and cultures.

St. Augustine's Belief on Diversity

The underlying value and principle upon which diversity is based is a profound respect for individual differences. It is a fundamental part of the philosophy of St. Augustine, dating back to his convergence to the spiritual life, in 386.  After much self reflection, Augustine came to believe that God was present in each individual he encountered, rich or poor, educated or uneducated.  It is the fundamental basis for his respect for individuals, and for diversity.

An Educational and Supportive Center

The Diversity Education Center at Merrimack College is a uniquely welcoming place where all members of the Merrimack communitiy are invited to communicate across lines of class, culture, ability, ethnicity, gender, national origin, race, religion, and sexual orientation.  It is staffed by students who serve as ambassadors to foster discussion and understanding of all issues.  Classes and events are often held in the center; a wealth of resources such as books, journals, magazines and videos encompassing all aspects of diversity are available.

Programming

The Diversity Education Center supports and promotes social and academic events that contribute to the creation of a campus environment that is truly inclusive. All members of the college community, including administrators, faculty, staff, students, groups and organizations may use the Center and its resources. The coordinator and staff of the Center will serve to assist individuals and groups in the development and planning of programming ideas. 

Advisory Board
