All undergraduate classes will be canceled from 2:30 - 6:00 p.m to allow students and faculty to attend. All other classes will take place as scheduled.
We encourage all members of the Merrimack College community to participate in this ceremony regardless of religious beliefs or affiliation. It is meant to be a unifying event, calling all of us to the awareness of our shared and common mission of learning and serving. It is intended to ritualize and signify the essential interconnection of all aspects of the College community and to call us to the awareness that each of us is essential to the College’s mission.
All First Year Students are required to attend. They will gather in their Orientation groups at 3:00 PM in O’Brien Plaza (the grassy area outside of Sparky’s Place). The senior class is invited to wear academic regalia and to march together in the academic procession. Seniors are invited to gather at 3:00 PM between the Church parking lot and the Collegiate Church to receive their academic gowns and line up for the procession. The faculty in academic regalia are invited to follow the senior class in the academic procession.
The speaker for this year’s Academic Convocation is Roland Merullo, a prolific and award-winning author of 16 books, including Breakfast with Buddha, a nominee for the Dublin IMPAC International Literary Award; The Talk-Funny Girl, a 2012 ALEX Award Winner; and Revere Beach Boulevard, which was named one of the “Top 100 Essential Books of New England” by the Boston Globe. Merullo is a former Writer in Residence at North Shore Community College and Miami Dade College, and has taught creative writing and literature at Bennington and Amherst Colleges. He has been a guest speaker at many literary events and venues and his essays have appeared in numerous publications including the New York Times, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Yankee Magazine, Newsweek, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.
All are welcome to attend a celebratory reception which will be held at the Rogers Center Lobby immediately following the convocation ceremony.
