Joseph Hayden: Missa in Tempore Belli
Ralph Vaughan Williams: Five Mystical Songs
The Andover Choral Society, directed by Michael Driscoll, performs Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli (Mass in the Time of War) and Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Five Mystical Songs.
Haydn’s Mass in Time of War is his tenth and one of the most popular of his fourteen mass settings. This piece was written at a time when Austria was being threatened by the advances of Napoleon’s forces. The work is also commonly known as the Paukenmesse due to the prominent timpani (pauken) solo in the final movement.
The Five Mystical Songs is a setting by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams of four poems by seventeenth century Anglican priest and metaphysical poet George Hebert. Completed in 1911, Vaughan Williams’ gift for melody and lush colorful orchestration abounds.
The chorus will perform these works with professional orchestra. Soloists include soprano Elisabeth Marshall, alto Emily Marvosh, tenor Gregory Zavracky and baritone Philip Lima.
Director Michael Driscoll notes, “The sheer beauty of the Vaughan Williams and the brilliance of Haydn’s Missa make these pieces favorites for audiences and singers alike.
