Film Series “Blues in the Night”
Richard Whorf, Priscilla Lane, Betty Field
Directed by Anatole Litvak, Not Rated, 89 minutes, 1941
This noir flavored film is a classic “band on
the road” movie. It traces a jazz band as it travels from one small-time gig to
another, always hoping for a big break but always denied fame thanks to the
band members’ personal demons. This melodramatic film reaches its climax when an
unrelenting depiction of a murder/suicide retrospectively sets the tone for
this dark film about the strange places music can take us.
