This “band on the road” film is loosely based on the tragic life and death of jazz great Bix Beiderbecke, here named Rick Martin and played by Kirk Douglas. After flourishing in the Black-dominated jazz scene of the 1920s, the Beiderbecke-inspired Martin character eventually turns to booze and bleak desperation before being saved by friends and band mates played Doris Day and Hoagy Carmichael.
