Set in the 1980s at the height of El Salvador’s brutal civil war, “Innocent Voices” focuses on Chava (Carlos Padilla), an 11-year-old abruptly elevated to man of the house when his father deserts the family. Seeing war through Chava’s perspective, as loved ones are put in harm’s way and friends conscripted into the armed forces immediately upon turning 12 – an age he dreads reaching – it’s hard not to think of the plight of children in all war-torn countries.
