Lucas Mann Reads from “Class A: Baseball in the Middle of Everywhere” at Writers House

Ever dream of making it in the big leagues? In his new book, Lucas Mann details a year spent in hardscrabble dugouts, bars, and buses with players from the Lumber-Kings, an Iowa-based, Class A baseball team in the Seattle Mariners' farm system.

Mann will read from Class A: Baseball in the Middle of Everywhere on Friday, November 15 at 3pm at Merrimack’s Writers House.  The reading, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a Q&A and reception.

Mann earned his MFA from the University of Iowa, where he was also the Provost’s Visiting Writer in Nonfiction.  His essays and stories have appeared in Barrelhouse, New Sout, Wigleaf, The Kenyon Review, and elsewhere. He teaches writing and journalism at the UMass-Dartmouth.

His first book has been called “lyrical, intellectual and personal” by The Boston Globe. NPR writes: “Lucas Mann’s Class A earns a position in a lineup that already includes Bang the Drum Slowly, The Natural, The Boys of Summer, Moneyball and The Art of Fielding because, remarkably, it offers a fresh, unexpected angle on this well-trodden game.”

A new initiative at Merrimack College, the Writers House is dedicated to creative writing, reading, and thinking, with a host of offerings for students, faculty, alumni, and the community at large.  It is located in the Academic Innovation Center, which is part of the Merrimack Athletic Complex expansion on Cullen Avenue.
