Rap troubadour Baba Brinkman brought his hip-hop version of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales to the Writers House on Tuesday, March 11, in conjunction with the English Department’s new course in Chaucer and Popular Culture. Students in the course met with Brinkman in a pre-performance seminar during which he responded to questions about the nature of his art and the genre of “lit-hop,” in which classic literary works are adapted and performed using the conventions of hip-hop. His performance later that evening packed the Writers House as he performed his rollicking versions of the tales of the Wife of Bath, Pardoner, and Merchant.
