Merrimack Community Helps to Feed Neighbors in Need

November 21, 2014
The Merrimack College community is coming together again this year to feed families in Lawrence with full Thanksgiving dinners. More than 90 baskets, filled with complete dinners, are to be delivered to the organization Neighbors in Need on Tuesday morning, just in time to celebrate America’s day of thanks.

A variety of groups on campus are working together to provide as many Thanksgiving baskets as possible. College departments, residence halls, clubs, sports teams, and individual employees are participating in this annual drive.  Each basket contains a turkey, potatoes and vegetables, dessert, fruit and many extras, to prepare a feast for a family who is in need of a helping hand. Baskets often contain a unique surprise to the recipients as some groups add things such as candles, candy, items that children might enjoy, and even a Merrimack College blanket.

Amy Rowland, an Augustinian Volunteer who is organizing this event, said Merrimack’s goal is to collect 100 full Thanksgiving dinner baskets for delivery on Tuesday.  Many departments or organizations are donating several baskets. Admissions Office alone has collected enough to put together five or six baskets.

“It is important to me and my colleagues to participate in the Thanksgiving Basket Drive because to me, Thanksgiving represents family, food and comfort,” says Dee Tuccelli, admissions operations specialist.  “We feel fortunate that we are able to share these same blessing with our neighbors in need.”

For over 30 years, Neighbors in Need has served at-risk families and youth in the greater Lawrence area by providing food, clothing and other necessities. With partners such as Merrimack College and area schools, churches, and organizations, Neighbors in Need feed more than 1,000 families at Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving to all.
