Bald is Beautiful

September 28, 2011
Merrimack College student Patrick Bradley ‘14 of Lawrence is a man of action.  He chose to give up a big part of his identity; a head full of beautiful curls, to bring attention to his cause, supporting young cancer patients through donating to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Bradley is part of a group on campus called Live2Give. The group is planning a number of events to raise money and awareness for the young patients at St. Jude’s, including “Relay for Life” and “Up ‘til Dawn,” a letter writing program organized by St. Jude’s Hospital where each volunteer writes a personal letter asking for donations to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Helping with the shearing was Kelly Medvecky, a representative from hair salon, Studio 13 in Methuen.  Slowly she shaved one side, then the next, until there was nothing left but a long curl on top.  That curl was ceremoniously shaved to cheers from the on-lookers.  Studio 13 matched the donations raised by Bradley, making a total of almost $600 to be given to St. Jude’s Hospital.

Supporting St. Jude’s has been an ongoing effort at Merrimack. Last year, senior Stephen Ramunno ‘11 spent time training at St. Jude’s Hospital and was so touched that he encouraged other students to spend this past summer training on how to fundraise for the unique cause. Students Stephanie Pomerleau ‘13 and Tara Bartley ‘12 inherited Ramunno’s mission and joined Merrimack staff member Ali Stinson for an experience they will never forget.

“St. Jude is a fantastic facility that is not like any other hospital,” said Stephanie Pomerleau. “Children are getting treatment at no cost to their family and are offered much needed support to help patients heal and go home. Families don’t feel so alone.”

As Bradley is now learning, “Bald is Beautiful” and he is proud to be supporting the cause to help children at St. Jude’s.
