This concrete canoe spent a few weeks in the Mendel Pond during spring semester. But why?
Our investigative reporter uncovered that the canoe was a successful practice piece created by Merrimack’s Chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineer (ASCE) students which gave significant insight into what needs to be done for next year’s Concrete Canoe Competition for which they plan to build a larger scale model. Our students placed the canoe in the pond to confirm their design and ensure that it would float, and to help advertise the CE program to incoming freshman and any other visitors to campus. The student primarily responsible for completing this canoe was Freeman (Bo) Boynton ‘13.
