Midnight Madness celebrates Merrimack and basketball season

October 26, 2015
It was madness. About 1,000 students turned out for the merriment of Midnight Madness at Hammel Court in Merrimack Athletics Complex Thursday to kick off the men’s and women’s basketball seasons.

“Midnight Madness is essentially a pep rally,” said Athletic Director Jeremy Gibson afterward. “It’s just a really nice event to launch the basketball season but more than that to build a sense of community around the athletic program.”

Midnight Madness was President Christopher E. Hopey’s idea several years ago to build on the sense of community on campus.

The Athletic Department partnered with the Office of Student Involvement to organize the event.

Gibson’s favorite T-shirt of the night bore the legend “warriors support warriors” and that told the whole story, he said.

There were balloons, games, and team introductions. The school dance team and cheer squad pumped up the excitement among students.

“It really is a student event, a student run event,” Gibson said.
