Students visit Fidelity Investments to learn more about the New England Association of Financial Professionals
Earlier this month, 14 Merrimack College students along with Professor Mary Papazian, Managing Director of the Mucci Capital Markets Lab, attended the regional meeting of the New England Association of Financial Professionals (NEAFP) at Fidelity Investments’ Merrimack, NH campus. Students were invited to attend by Merrimack alumnus Steve Johnson ’80, who is the NEAFP regional ambassador and a Senior Vice President at Fidelity Investments. This was the first time college students were invited to participate in the conference as part of a new initiative to give eligible students the opportunity to get involved in the NEAFP. The Merrimack students were joined by fellow students from UNH, St. Anselm and SNHU.
Students were exposed to Fidelity’s corporate culture and participated in several presentations from leaders across the financial industry, including a presentation on short duration investing and the new SEC regulations affecting registered Institutional Money Market Funds. The Senior Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy for Fidelity Investments provided attendees with an update on the current political climate, key policy priorities, and the potential impact of the 2016 elections on key financial regulatory and legislative issues. Representatives from Wells Fargo presented new initiatives to create more efficient account reconciliation systems. The meeting concluded with a question and answer panel where students were able to ask questions of Fidelity associates to get a feel for the current professional environment as well as what it is like to work at Fidelity Investments. After the conference, students were given a tour of Fidelity’s trading floor before heading back to the Merrimack campus.
Participation in the regional NEAFP meeting offered students insight into the industry and what the Association has to offer. In addition to meeting with alumnus Steve Johnson ’80, students met with Regional NEAFP Board Member and Chair of the Regional Ambassador Committee, Michael Lenihan, President of TMXpert Group, to learn more about NEAFP.
Professor Papazian strongly encouraged students to attend, ask questions and learn more as she was an active member of NEAFP during her tenure in corporate banking and supports the initiative to build student membership. For more information on NEAFP, please visit the website at: www.neafp.org.
