Girard School students recognized by Financial Executives International

Finance students Marina Maylor ’16 and Brian VandenAkker ’17 receive honors at the FEI Academic Awards ceremony in Boston.

The Boston chapter of Financial Executives International (FEI) – an organization of senior-level finance executives – honored two Girard School of Business students at their annual academic awards ceremony in April.

Brian VandenAkker ’17 was selected as a scholarship recipient, an award given to recognize his academic performance, business experience, extracurricular activities, and leadership. VandenAkker was honored to be selected for the award, “I was both humbled and proud to be a part of the group of students who were recognized by these accomplished financial executives. The students that were chosen for this award were talented and hard-working individuals. More importantly, I was proud to see the time and dedication that every award winner had put into charity. It meant a lot to me to see how FEI recognized the importance of philanthropy.”

Finance professor and faculty sponsor Mary Papazian describes VandenAkker, “Brian has a natural curiosity that was obvious to me early on in his studies as a Finance and Economics major. He hopes to pursue a career that has the potential to make an impact, and I think he will definitely be successful in achieving it.”

Of senior Marina Maylor ’16, who received the Outstanding Graduating Senior Award, Papazian says, “Marina is one of our most talented, well-rounded, and likeable students. She is very aware of the importance of community service and she is engaged in giving back both on-campus and in the greater community.” Maylor, who received the Philip Lee Memorial Award earlier this year, was nominated by Girard School faculty based on her having earned the highest grade point average among finance seniors and for her leadership and service contributions to the Girard School and Merrimack as a whole.

The students were recognized for their accomplishments, along with students from Babson, Bentley, Boston College, Northeastern, and other Boston-area schools, at a reception at the UMass Club in Boston. The keynote speaker for the evening was Dr. J. Keith Motley, chancellor of the University of Massachusetts Boston.
