Students share their experience and the benefits of doing an internship at the first-ever Business Internship Showcase

Business student interns presented posters detailing their experiences and take-aways from their semester-long internships at the Internship Showcase at the Roger’s Center.

After teaching the Business Internship course this past spring, Professor Julie Fitzmaurice saw how passionate and excited the student interns were to share information about their internship experiences. She created the Internship Showcase this fall to give student interns that opportunity.

“It’s important for students to really think about various aspects of their work experiences,” Fitzmaurice said. “The Internship Showcase enabled students to reflect on their work and talk about their experience with younger students who aren’t yet doing internships.”

The 4-credit Business Internship course is designed to complement students’ internship experience and set them up to see work as a life-long learning opportunity. Weekly readings on topics, ranging from time management to working effectively with your boss, provided thoughtful and educational advice on important business skills.

“The business skills I improved from working at this internship include time management, communication, organization and networking,” said Joanna Garrity ’18, a Marketing student and Event Planning Intern at AE Events. “These all seem to be very simple but actually practicing them in a real office setting allowed me to greatly improve these skills.”

The course requires 180 hours of work at the internship, two one-on-one meetings with the professor, and regular readings and assignments. To connect the students with each other, an on-line community was created through discussion board reflections where students both responded to set questions and offered advice to each other. 

For the Internship Showcase, students were asked to create a poster where they reflected on their experiences, such as the skills they learned on the job, advice they would give to a student who is thinking about doing an internship and the impact the internship had on their career plans.

“Internships are a great way to learn what you like and dislike and will help you decide what career path you want to take,” said Hannah Lee ’17, a Marketing student and Sales Intern at WHDH 7 News Boston.

This was definitely true for Samantha Waskowitz, ’17, a Finance student and Alternative Investment Solutions Intern at State Street Global Services Corporation. “This internship changed the job I would choose to pursue after college,” she said. “I have realized I have a greater interest in the global markets and the global exchange side of the finance world rather financial services as a whole.”
