Graduate Student Takes a Spin on Wheel of Fortune

Graduate student Emily Martin appeared on an episode of popular game show Wheel of Fortune that aired Jan. 12, 2017, and even though she was winning until the final moments, she missed out on first place by a single letter.

It was an exciting game that went back and forth as contestants won money only to lose it with unlucky spins of the wheel. It was a difficult night for all three contestants who kept hitting on “bankrupt” and “miss a turn” when they spun the giant roulette wheel.

Martin, a master’s student in the School of Education and Social Policy, took a quick $3,400 lead in the game and was at $5,300 when she went into the express round, where she reached $10,300.

The answer to the question asking contestants to name a “place” was Kona International Airport but Martin couldn’t come up with the letter “k” before the buzzer sounded and another contestant answered.

After leading much of the game, the show ended with the Andover, Massachusetts, resident in third place, taking home $1,000.

“Emily Martin has been an excellent student in our program,” said Education Department Associate Dean Russell Olwell. “We feel fortunate to have the opportunity to help her reach her career goals through our online masters in education program.”
