Song, Scripture and Poetry to Highlight Lenten Service

The college's liturgical music ensemble, Merrimack Schola, will present an hour-long Lenten service on Monday, March 27, at 7 p.m. in the Rogers Center for the Arts. A reception will immediately follow.

The performance will feature contemporary Christian music by artists such as Hillsong United, Matt Redman and Chris Tomlin; scriptural readings; and spoken poetry by such authors as William Blake, Rainer Maria Rilke and G.K. Chesterton.

“We’re excited to share this beautiful music for Lent,” said Director of Liturgical Music Hugh Hinton, the schola’s director. “The choir sings in such a heartfelt way. They are a wonderfully dedicated group of people who give their time to lead music and liturgy.

All presentations will amplify this year’s Lenten theme at Merrimack, “From Broken to Whole,” chosen to call attention to the world’s brokenness and the need for healing and restoration through reflection and prayer.

The event is free and open to the public. Area parishes have been invited to create a warm town-gown environment at the service., officials said.

Monday’s performance is part of a weeks-long Lenten program developed by the Grace J. Palmisano Center for Campus Ministry. The program features a discussion series at the Sanctuary Coffeehouse every Thursday from 4 to 5:30 p.m. through April 6.
