Graduate Programs

Richard St. Louis

Richard St. Louis always knew his calling was in the public sector, but he wanted to get more experience before applying for jobs in the field. He decided to enroll in Merrimack College’s Master in Public Affairs program to get in-depth insight on how government functions.

“With my master’s, I believe it will give me a leg up when applying for jobs as well as a better understanding of government structure from a management perspective,” says Richard.

After receiving his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Merrimack College with a double minor in Criminology and Pre-Law, Richard knew that Merrimack was the best place for him to earn his MPA.

“The MPA program has helped be in my career goals by showing me a deeper understanding of government management styles and government financial management,” explains Richard. “While my undergraduate degree has helped me a lot with understanding government, this program added on and went into a deeper depth of what I had learned previously.”

Richard interned for the Town of North Andover while taking classes toward his MPA at night. Over the course of his internship, Richard worked in various departments of local government and assisted on many different projects, which ultimately provided him with a better understanding of how municipal government functions.

Richard’s MPA courses also contributed significantly to his understanding and interest in the public sector and local government. He particularly benefited from knowledgeable faculty members involved in the MPA program who inspired him with real-world examples and situations.

“What I appreciated most about the program was that some of the faculty members worked in the public sector. The teachers that worked in government were able to connect the bridge of what I was learning and give context to it,” says Richard. “The teachers gave countless examples of what they experienced working in government and how to confront such issues and problems.”

Merrimack’s MPA program taught Richard the value of real-world experience and context, and it has given him even more motivation to start his career in the public sector.
