Tell us about your internship.
My role was a mix of operations with tax intern responsibilities. I performed a variety of duties from scanning and filing client forms and documents to preparing tax returns.
Why did you decide to do the Accounting Coop?
I felt it was the most beneficial way to gain learning experience as an accounting major to help decide if I was in the right major. Since the Coop was full-time, the firm gave me a lot of responsibility and I was able to earn their trust to be able to work on some things that part-time interns don’t get the chance to do. Doing the Coop during tax season allowed me to get the full experience of what the busy season is like. I also did it because I was torn about going abroad and, this way, I gained the experience and still have room for my travel plans.
What surprised you the most about your experience?
I was surprised by the amount of work and different steps that go into planning and preparing a tax return from start to finish. Every job and task someone on the team performs is a contribution to helping get the returns done and the firm run smoothly.
What advice would you give to a student considering the Accounting Coop?
My advice is to 100% do the Coop. It’s an amazing chance to see if you have chosen the right career path or not, and what you would look for in a firm. Even if you decide you haven’t chosen the right major, it is still very beneficial to help you grow professionally and get experience working in the real world.
