A college visit for alum Maureen Santiago’s Lawrence High School students

June 06, 2016
The Lawrence High School students are working with Merrimack student coaches through a partnership with the Financial Capability Center and ACT Lawrence to create plans to achieve financial goals, ranging from saving for a car to understanding student loans

The 22 LHS students, who were on campus to celebrate their progress in the Financial Capability Center’s coaching program, also got a taste of the college student experience. Marina Maylor ’16, a student ambassador and financial capability center coach, provided a campus tour, which included lunch – for the full cafeteria experience – and a visit to the Robert Frost statue (Frost was a native of Lawrence, MA). The students also stopped at the Mucci Capital Markets Lab, where coach and lab assistant Jaime Cortes ’16 offered a hands-on demonstration of the Bloomberg terminals. The students finished their day with a one-on-one coaching session with their Merrimack student coaches.

Finance professor Ana Silva credits Santiago ’93 with the success of the partnership between the Center and LHS, “she has been totally supportive and enthusiastic about the program and will recruit students for us again next year.”

The LHS students and their Merrimack coaches worked on setting and achieving goals, such as: understanding student loans, exploring scholarship opportunities, finding a part-time job, saving for a car, controlling spending, and opening a bank account. LHS students who demonstrated achievement toward their self-selected goal were rewarded with a financial incentive to help achieve it.

The coaching program at Merrimack is offered as a 4-credit internship. It is open to all majors and any student interested in learning more about personal finance and enhancing their mentoring and coaching skills. Contact Associate Professor and Center Director Ana Silva at for more information.
