College Donations Brighten Holiday for Those in Need

November 22, 2016
Merrimack College’s students, faculty, staff and school boosters donated about 118 Thanksgiving dinners, complete with turkeys and the fixings, to Lawrence-based Neighbors in Need this year to help make Thursday’s holiday more enjoyable for the food-insecure.

The Grace J. Palmisano Center for Campus Ministry organized the event, led by Augustinian Volunteer Maggie Qualter.

As the donations came flooding in from all points on campus the Tuesday before the holiday, about a dozen student volunteers working out of the Sakowich Campus Center’s MPR organized the food into plastic bins and cardboard boxes and loaded all of it on vans for the ride to Neighbors in Need.

This year’s donations easily surpassed the 102 baskets donated a year ago.

In addition to the basics such as turkey, vegetables, potatoes, gravy and pies, many of the donated baskets included extras such as coffee, baking supplies, nuts, candies and napkins.
